We the Pixels translates the living count of the United States into a field of color where one pixel = one person. Using a custom Python program, I generated sixteen unique digital panels, each a randomized mosaic of pixels. Together they assemble into a single image measuring 60" × 48".
Printed at 345 dpi, the full composition contains roughly 342.8 million pixels, intentionally aligning with current estimates of the U.S. population. From across the room the work reads as a cohesive, shimmering whole. Up close, and especially with magnification, each pixel stands apart as a tiny, distinct unit of color.
That shift in perception is the heart of the piece. A nation appears unified at a distance, yet it is built one person at a time. The title echoes the opening words of the U.S. Constitution, “We the People,” and asks viewers to consider belonging, individuality, and collective identity in our current political moment.
In my own words, this piece reflects my continuing search to find where I belong in our nation. Especially now, in the current political climate, We the Pixels is both a meditation and a statement: every person matters, every life counts, and no one should disappear into the blur.
